Summertime is great for relaxation and recreation, but it’s not always so great for your children’s teeth. What tends to happen is that the “vacation” in summer vacation can cause you and your kids to ignore rules and schedules. Dentist Columbia Dr. Gregory Wych advises that if you let them, your kids could embrace some bad habits that can lead to poor oral health over their lifetime.
Here are a few mistakes to avoid while your kids are off from school this summer:
1) Trauma from Physical Activity: As fun as it is to play roughly with each other, kids sometimes go a little too far. Sports, swimming, and playing are just a few physical activities that can lead to an oral injury such as a tooth being chipped, loosened, or knocked out altogether! (For sports like football or soccer, it might be a good idea to get your kids mouth guards for extra safety.)
2) Frequent Snacking: During the hotter days of summer everyone loves indulging in a cool, sweet treat in an attempt to beat the heat! Unfortunately, popular sweet treats such as Slushies, Icees, milkshakes, popsicles, and ice cream are loaded with lots of sugar that is likely to stick to your teeth!
Your dentist Columbia suggests encouraging your kids to use moderation when indulging in these types of snacks, and remind them of one simple but important tip: After you’ve finished eating these treats, make sure you rinse your mouth out with water to reduce the damage that can occur and help keep your teeth healthy. As long as they keep it to a minimum – and remember to rinse or brush afterwards – they can literally have their cake and ice cream!
3) Relaxed Schedule away from Home: When the kids are away from home, they often make poor food choices or put aside their morning and evening dental routines. It’s especially easy for younger children to forget their normal routines while in different surroundings.
Your dentist Columbia suggests sending along items like toothbrushes, floss, and mouthwash so it will be easier for them to maintain their oral health routines. A friendly reminder from mom wouldn’t hurt, either!
